Green AI and smart cities: Europe's autumn in five stops
Issue 09 travels through five very different stops of Europe's AI autumn: the Green AI Day in Stuttgart, the five-day AI Week Frankfurt at The Squaire, TEDAI Vienna at the Hofburg, the Data & AI Conference Europe in London and the Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona. Framed by an AI ticker on the price war around Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6, the slow-down debate inside the labs and the first enforcement wave of the EU AI Act.
Europe's AI autumn 2026 opens with a price war. In late September, Anthropic cut token prices noticeably with Claude Opus 5.5, and OpenAI countered within minutes with two cheaper GPT-6 models. Capable models are increasingly becoming a commodity — good for users, uncomfortable for everyone urging caution.
Because at the same time, the debate about pace is growing: an open letter from within the labs, joined by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, calls for slowing frontier development — while the race continues unabated. In Europe, meanwhile, regulation is turning into practice: since the transition period ended in early August, the EU AI Office and national supervisory authorities have begun inspecting the first high-risk applications, from résumé screening and credit scoring to healthcare triage.
It is exactly in this tension — faster, cheaper, but please trustworthy and resource-aware — that the five stops of this issue sit: from sustainable AI in Stuttgart via the enterprise week in Frankfurt and the ideas stage of TEDAI in Vienna to data trust in London and the smart city in Barcelona.

Green AI Day Stuttgart — making AI sustainable
· Stuttgart, Germany · Metropol Kino Stuttgart
On 15 October 2026, the Green AI Day at Stuttgart's Metropol Kino puts the flip side of the AI boom on the agenda: the resource and energy appetite of the models. From 12:00 to 21:00, up to 300 attendees (per the organizer) gather for keynotes, panels, startup pitches and five breakout sessions.
The five focus areas range from AI in construction via AI and robotics in production and AI in film & animation to energy-efficient data centres and agentic AI. The sessions are hosted by regional research and industry partners such as the Fraunhofer institutes IOSB and IPA, the HLRS supercomputing centre, KIT, the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy and GFT Technologies.
That positions the day as a Baden-Württemberg hub for the intersection of sustainability and AI — small, curated and deliberately hands-on rather than a big stage.
Speaker highlights
- Vinz Leo Hofmann — Landeshauptstadt Stuttgart
- Sarah Schuhbauer — Wirtschaftsförderung Region Stuttgart

AI Week Frankfurt — five days of enterprise AI at The Squaire
· Frankfurt, Germany · The Squaire
From 26 to 30 October 2026, AI Week Frankfurt turns The Squaire above the long-distance station into a five-day B2B conference. It opens on Monday evening with a leadership event for around 500 guests (per the organizer) before Tuesday and Wednesday scale up as "Cross Industry" days across three parallel stages.
Thursday belongs entirely to "Banking & Finance" — a focus that mirrors Frankfurt's role as a financial hub — and Friday brings the "AI Week Hack" with an open build floor and an application-only OpenAI Codex Enterprise hackathon. The content splits across a Main Stage, Tech Stage, Studio Stage and hands-on workshops.
More than 70 speakers are announced, among them Agnes Heftberger (CEO of Microsoft Germany & Austria), Nils Reimers (VP AI Search at Cohere), Hartmut König (CTO Central Europe at Adobe) and Walid Mehanna (Chief Data & AI Officer at Merck).

03
TEDAI Vienna — the ideas stage at the Hofburg
· Vienna, Austria · Hofburg Wien
From 28 to 30 October 2026, TEDAI Vienna brings the TED format to Vienna's Hofburg. It opens with a gala evening, followed by a "Discovery Day" of sessions, panels, workshops and curated "Dine Around" dinners at Viennese restaurants, before "Talks Day" gathers 20+ curated, fact-checked TED Talks and an afterparty.
The talks are tied to clear themes — from "AI & Safety" via "AI & Agents" and "AI & Brain" to "AI & Drug Discovery" and "AI & Music". The main stage is complemented by spotlight panels, live demos, "Ideas Adventures" and a dedicated Executive Track.
The lineup is headlined by AI pioneer Geoffrey Hinton; other names include author and activist Cory Doctorow, Atlantic CEO Nicholas Thompson, cybersecurity expert Mikko Hyppönen and Economist deputy editor Kenneth Cukier.

- Geoffrey Hinton — KI-Pionier (AI & Safety)
- Cory Doctorow — Autor & Aktivist
- Nicholas Thompson — CEO, The Atlantic
- Mikko Hyppönen — Cybersecurity-Experte

Data & AI Conference Europe — when AI has to build trust
· London, United Kingdom · etc.venues Fenchurch Street
IRM UK's Data & AI Conference Europe runs from 2 to 6 November 2026 at etc.venues Fenchurch Street in London. Workshop days on 2, 5 and 6 November bracket the two-day main conference and exhibition on 3 and 4 November.
Under the theme "Where Data Drives Intelligence and AI Builds Trust", the programme spreads across four tracks: applied AI, data and AI strategy, modern data platforms and architecture, and governance, risk, privacy and responsible AI. The workshops dig into AI agents, governance frameworks, data quality and organisational change.
The keynote "Humanizing AI Strategy" is given by Tiankai Feng, Director of Data and AI Strategy at Thoughtworks. The programme leans deliberately toward governance and trust — fitting for the tightened enforcement of the EU AI Act.

Smart City Expo World Congress — AI as the city's operating system
· Barcelona, Spain · Fira Barcelona Gran Via
From 3 to 5 November 2026, the Smart City Expo World Congress at Fira Barcelona Gran Via gathers the global smart-city scene. Per the organizer, more than 600 speakers and over 500 exhibitors come together — organised into eight tracks from "Enabling Technologies" via mobility and energy to the "Blue Economy".
Here AI is not an end in itself but a cross-cutting theme: it appears mainly under "Enabling Technologies" and in governance, while the speaker list is dominated by mayors and city leaders — among them Anne Hidalgo, Gergely Karácsony (Budapest) and Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr (Freetown).
Flagship formats include the World Smart City Awards, the "Innovation Playground" startup showcase and guided urban-innovation tours of Barcelona. For an AI audience, the congress is worth attending as a look at how cities intend to deploy the technology at scale and responsibly.
Speaker highlights
- Anne Hidalgo — Global Ambassador, Global Covenant of Mayors
- Gergely Karácsony — Bürgermeister von Budapest
- Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr — Bürgermeisterin von Freetown
- Esteve Almirall — Professor für KI & Innovation, ESADE
AI ticker: price war, inspection waves and the question of pace
Autumn opens with a price drop: Anthropic's Claude Opus 5.5 cut token prices by roughly a fifth, and OpenAI followed within minutes with two cheaper GPT-6 models. Capable models are becoming a commodity — good for users, uncomfortable for everyone urging caution.
Because in parallel, the debate about pace is growing: an open letter from within the labs and statements by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei call for slowing frontier development — while the race continues unabated.
In Europe, the EU AI Act is turning into lived oversight: after the transition period ended in early August, the AI Office and national authorities are inspecting the first high-risk applications, even as the "Digital Omnibus" pushed individual deadlines back. It is exactly this tension — faster, cheaper, but please trustworthy — that runs through all five stops of this issue.
