From Zurich to Stockholm: Europe's AI autumn gets concrete

Issue 05 follows the AI autumn across Europe: the research flagship AI+X Summit in Zurich, the community-driven Dublin AI Week ahead of the EU summit, the enterprise CX conference WAVE in Berlin, Scaleway's infrastructure event ai-PULSE in Paris and the Nordic Data & AI Stockholm Summit — plus an AI ticker on the ongoing release wave around GPT-6 Astra, Gemini 3.8 Flash, Claude Fable 5.1 and DeepSeek V4.1-Flash, and on the EU AI Act's sharp new enforcement powers.

September 2026 opened with the densest release week of the year so far: Anthropic shipped Claude Fable 5.1, OpenAI countered with GPT-6 Astra, Google followed with Gemini 3.8 Flash, and DeepSeek added V4.1-Flash. At the same time the EU AI Act grew real teeth — Brussels can now inspect models, restrict market access and impose fines of up to €15m or 3% of annual turnover. The core question shifts from "which model?" to "how does this reach production, who is liable, what actually pays off?".

That is exactly where Europe's AI autumn picks up — and this time it does so right across the continent. We take along five very different answers: Zurich bundles fundamental research and startup demos on one stage, Dublin spreads a whole builder week across the city, Berlin moves voice agents from prototype to production, Paris argues over control of the infrastructure, and Stockholm sorts the Nordic practitioner scene into eight themed blocks.

Five cities, five formats, one through-line: model headlines turning into day-to-day operations.

AI+X Summit Zurich — four stages between fundamental research and startup demo

· Zurich, Switzerland · StageOne Event & Convention Hall

On 1 October, the AI+X Summit is the flagship of the Zurich AI Festival and fills the StageOne Event & Convention Hall in Zurich-Oerlikon. Run by the ETH AI Center together with ZHAW and UZH.ai, it combines academic depth with applied practice — the organisers expect more than 2,000 participants, 130+ speakers and 50+ exhibitors.

The programme runs across four formats: a Main Stage with keynotes and high-level discussions from industry, academia and policy; a fast-paced Innovator Stage for applied AI and startups; in-depth Tracks & Workshops (including AI in Medicine, Financial Services, Education, Biomolecular Design, Reinforcement Learning and AI Psychology & Ethics); and an Exhibition zone as a demo space for startups, industry partners and research groups. A dedicated networking tool schedules on-site meetings.

Dublin AI Week — 35 events, a startup pressure cooker and the run-up to the EU summit

· Dublin, Ireland

From 2 to 9 October, Dublin AI Week spreads across the whole city: around 35 mostly free events for product builders and founders, presented by Give(a)Go with the Baseline Community as partner. Individual sessions — workshops, demo nights, the founder-and-investor format Rebase — are booked via Luma.

At its heart is the "Pressure Cooker", a startup hackathon from 2 to 8 October with a €100,000 pre-seed prize pool: from idea to funding in a week. The timing is deliberate — the week runs right before the International AI Summit on 14 October, which Ireland hosts as part of its EU Council presidency. Builders who travel in can stay on for the policy chapter.

WAVE Berlin — when voice agents need to move from PoC to production

· Berlin, Germany · Wilhelm Studios

On 7 and 8 October, Parloa invites attendees to the Wilhelm Studios Berlin for WAVE 2026, a conference on AI-powered customer experience. The organisers expect 700+ European enterprise leaders; the format combines masterclasses, a conference day, an expo and a welcome reception (tickets from €799).

The content centres on agentic AI in customer contact: from proof-of-concept to value-driving production, EU AI Act compliance and data sovereignty, scaling voice agents globally, and how to turn service from a cost centre into a revenue driver. Speakers include Parloa founder Malte Kosub, Microsoft product VP Marco Casalaina and executives from Allianz Partners, HealthEquity and Berlin Airport — plus, as a crowd-puller, world champion Bastian Schweinsteiger.

Speaker highlights

  • Malte Kosub — Co-Founder & CEO, Parloa
  • Marco Casalaina — VP Products, Microsoft
  • Pieter Viljoen — Chief Data & AI Officer, Allianz Partners
  • Mike Gathright — Chief Customer Officer, HealthEquity
  • István Szabó — Managing Director & COO, Flughafen Berlin

ai-PULSE Paris — three stages for compute, market and control of the infrastructure

· Paris, France · Station F

Scaleway hosts the fourth ai-PULSE on 13 October at Station F in Paris — a one-day event with, the organisers say, 70+ speakers and 2,000+ attendees, plus an online stream. On-site access runs via registration.

The programme is sorted onto three tellingly named stages: ENTER (compute access, models and platforms for builders), SHIFT (market dynamics, competing technologies, emerging players) and CTRL (control of the infrastructure, open source, data traceability, cost-efficient architectures). The line-up leans deliberately toward European sovereignty — with Raffi Krikorian (CTO, Mozilla), Neil Zeghidour (CEO, GRADIUM), Lars Maaløe (Co-Founder & CTO, Corti), chip voices such as Philippe Notton (SiPearl) and Khaled Maalej (VSORA), and Vincent Molina (pyannoteAI).

Speaker highlights

  • Raffi Krikorian — CTO, Mozilla
  • Neil Zeghidour — CEO, GRADIUM
  • Lars Maaløe — Co-Founder & CTO, Corti
  • Philippe Notton — CEO & Founder, SiPearl
  • Vincent Molina — CEO & Co-Founder, pyannoteAI

Data & AI Stockholm — eight themed blocks for the Nordic practitioner scene

· Stockholm, Sweden · Space Stockholm

To close our tour we head north: on 14 October the community-driven, non-profit Data & AI Stockholm Summit brings around 300 practitioners to Space Stockholm at Sergels Torg. The organisers list 17+ speakers; registration runs via Luma (paid).

The programme is organised into eight themed blocks — from AI in Production via Data Platforms & Modern Infrastructure, ML & LLM Applications and Responsible & Trusted AI to "The Future of Data & AI in the Nordics". On stage, enterprise and startup perspectives mix: Joe Welton (Large Enterprise Lead UKI & Europe North, OpenAI), Ekaterina Garbaruk Monnot (GM/Studio Lead, Spotify), Armin Catovic (Director Data and AI, Funnel), Jonas Björk (Head of Data & Insights, Lovable) and Sanna Kuoppamäki (Associate Professor, KTH).

AI ticker: release wave, DeepSeek's counter and the AI Act switched to enforce

The release cadence stays high: after the early-September wave with Claude Fable 5.1, GPT-6 Astra and Gemini 3.8 Flash, DeepSeek followed on 10 September with V4.1-Flash — cutting agent memory costs, the vendor says, fourfold. That price pressure is the real trend: what decides things is not the next benchmark number but whether agentic workflows become affordable to run continuously.

On the regulatory side, the EU AI Act has moved out of the announcement phase: Brussels can inspect models, restrict market access and impose fines of up to €15m or 3% of global annual turnover — with an explicit eye on the big US providers. For this autumn's European stages that means compliance, data sovereignty and "who is liable for the agent?" are no longer side panels but the main programme. Our five stops from Zurich to Stockholm mirror exactly that.

Stay fresh: the next issue keeps following the autumn — with the big October summits and whatever comes of this week's demos.
